Deflection is Vapor World's core combat mechanic, inspired by Sekiro. As an enemy attack lands, press deflect at the right moment to parry it without taking damage. Land enough successful deflects and the enemy's guard breaks into a Crack Break, leaving it completely defenseless. During a Crack Break you can extract its Ember with the power of the Id, healing and empowering yourself while dealing heavy damage. The window is forgiving but precise, and mastering it is the key to every fight in the dream.

A Crack Break is the staggered, defenseless state enemies enter after you deflect enough of their attacks. Each successful deflect fills a pressure gauge; once it fills, the enemy cracks and cannot act for a few seconds. In that window you extract its Ember with the Id power for bonus damage and recovery. Forcing Crack Breaks is the fastest way to end fights and the main source of Ember income, so learning deflect timings for each enemy type is the single most valuable combat skill in the game.
